These Bull Shark jaws are named in tribute to the young oceanographer Matt Hooper, who was drafted in to help the Chief of police catch or kill the predatory shark. In the book, he was actually killed by the Great White whilst in the shark cage, but in the film he survived to the end. Both Spielberg who directed and Dreyfus who played Hooper never returned to the sequel because the studios didn’t want to wait for Spielberg’s schedule to clear before beginning Jaws 2. Ironically, Spielberg was filming Close Encounters also with Dreyfus so both would have had a hand in the sequel if it weren’t for the studios impatience.

FACTS – One or several bull sharks may have been responsible for the Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916, which were the inspiration for Peter Benchley’s novel Jaws!! The speculation of bull sharks possibly being responsible is based on two fatal bites occurring in brackish and fresh water.

A  member of the Requiem Shark family (Carcharhinidae) the Bull Shark (Carcharhinus Leucas) are migratory live-bearing sharks. They are also the best known of 43 sharks known to swim in fresh water, leading to them also being known as the Zambezi Shark or Lake Nicaragua shark.
